Q&A With Libby Duncan

When did you know you wanted to do hair?

I always wanted to do hair. I went to college, but nothing else ever felt like the right fit.  Following my heart and enrolling in cosmetology school was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

How long have you been doing color?

This March (2017) I celebrated my thirteenth anniversary as colorist and stylist. Time sure has flown by!

How would you describe your approach to doing hair?

To me, healthy hair is beautiful hair. It is so important to me that the choices I make when formulating color protect the integrity and condition of the hair. I do a thorough consultation to determine the current condition of the hair, the suitability of a desired look, and to discuss maintenance preferences. I share tips for proper home care to ensure long lasting, vibrant color and I make sure the looks I create complement face shape and skin tone. I also recommend seasonal changes to keep things fresh and exciting.

What inspires your creativity?

I take several classes a year to make sure that I am always able to offer the newest and the best techniques. I love to read fashion magazines to see where the trends are heading. People sit in my chair and tell me, "Do whatever, I totally trust you." With that trust comes responsibility. I want to constantly push myself to grow and to be better than I was the day before.

What advice would you give someone considering coloring their hair for the first time?

The possibilities are endless with color. If someone is timid about color, I usually recommend starting off with a demi-permanent glossing service. The non-ammonia formula is so shiny and beautiful. It fades gradually and on tone, so the maintenance is very flexible. For someone who wants to brighten up a little bit, a few subtle highlights are a great place to start.

Do you customize a hair color service for each and every client?

Absolutely! It is how we set the standard of professional hair color. I am able to blend chemistry and creativity to give each guest results that are uniquely their own. You can't buy that on a shelf!

What's your approach to returning clients?

It doesn't matter if you've seen me once or if I've been doing your hair for years, you will get a consultation on every visit. The worst thing a stylist can be is complacent. It is important to me to always make time to check in before we get started. I want you to feel like I am approachable, open, and easy to talk to so that you always leave with a look you love.

Describe your personal style:

I'd say my style is mostly classic with contemporary touches. One of the best parts of being a colorist is that I get to live vicariously through my guests' personal styles. It makes every day exciting and new.

What are you doing when you're not at the salon?

Spending time with my family at the beach or cuddled up to watch movies, drinking coffee, reading books, cooking, traveling, catching up with my girlfriends, shopping, watching Bravo, snuggling my sweet old dog, Buddy .
